Step back in time and experience the timeless appeal of Kickback Cottage, a beloved family getaway that stands as a living testament to resilience and history. This extraordinary home is one of the few on Oak Island to have weathered the wrath of Hurricane Hazel in 1954—a powerful Category 4 storm that forever shaped the landscape of the Carolina coast. While Hazel’s devastating winds and waves claimed much of the area, Kickback Cottage endured, its sturdy structure a symbol of strength amidst the storm’s fury. Today, it offers guests a unique opportunity to stay in a piece of Oak Island history, blending the nostalgia of its storied past with all the amenities of modern coastal living.

Sleeping up to 16 guests, Kickback Cottage is an ideal hideaway for sizable families or groups seeking a meaningful escape. Its ground floor is a hub of fun and relaxation, featuring a bar space ideal for evening gatherings, a pool table, ping pong, and bicycles for exploring the breathtaking island. Whether you’re strolling the beach, cycling along peaceful coastal roads, or simply unwinding on the deck, this home invites you to embrace the slower pace of life that Oak Island is known for.

Beyond the bungalow’s walls, Oak Island offers countless adventures. The close by beaches, with their soft sand and gentle waves, are ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and beachcombing. History enthusiasts can visit the iconic Oak Island Lighthouse and reflect on the island’s storied past, while anglers will savor casting a line from the pier or booking a fishing charter to discover the rich coastal waters. Golfers can tee off at the local course, appreciating impressive vistas of the Atlantic.

Just a short drive away, the photogenic town of Southport offers appealing stores, antique stores, and waterfront dining that showcases the area’s famed fresh seafood. Nature lovers can kayak through the island’s serene marshes or discover local parks with trails teeming with native wildlife. Keep an eye out for sea turtles, a cherished part of the coastal ecosystem.

As the sun sets, return to Kickback Cottage, where its legacy of endurance and hospitality awaits. Prepare a family meal in the kitchen, share stories of the day over drinks at the bar, or gather in the comfortable living spaces for a movie nighttime. The enduring spirit of this home, paired with its warm and inviting ambiance, makes it a place where memories are not just made but cherished.

Kickback Cottage isn’t just a vacation rental—it’s a piece of Oak Island’s history and a celebration of its strength and beauty. Come be a part of its story and create your own memorable chapter on this remarkable island.

Tips to get the perfect Oak Island rental experience:

Find your perfect rental home:

  • Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • To book the most suitable rental for your budget, we recommend reserving in Fall or Spring months. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at Wrightsville Beach restaurants, tours, and activities.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your family qualifies for a discount.
  • Property management companies often offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guides have money saving offers on nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

Narrow your Search:

  • To start, have your family choose vacation dates and a budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. Kickback Cottage~ Private Beach Access, Pool Table, Sunrises on the Porch! has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is generally accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, call the host before booking your rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to establish what configuration is best for your vacation group.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or charges applied to your agreement.
  • Visiting for a single attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking

Some things to know before you go:

  • Store the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents many concerns.
  • Lock your vacation home while you're away. Protect your property!
  • To ensure that damages are not attributed to your visit, inspect for any problem areas upon your arrival. Contact the property manager immediately to report any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Frequently, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected everything. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your group have a wonderful stay? Most rental websites make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.

Victory Beach Vacations

Visitors who are on the hunt for the postcard-perfect vacation rental in the heart of the Carolina Beach or Kure Beach area will find an enticing selection and plenty of friendly customer service when they rent through Victory Beach Vacations. Based in Carolina Beach in the coastal Cape Fear region, Victory Beach Vacations has more than 100 vacation rentals in all shapes and sizes to ensure that every vacationing family can find their dream home away from home on the beach.   When you book your Cape Fear getaway with Victory Beach Vacations, the fun doesn’t end when you leave the beach, it continues with an array of privately-owned properties outfitted with all of the amenities needed for a fabulous beach vacation.   Jenna Lanier, General Manager, explains that her family first opened the rental and property management business in 2002. At the forefront of Victory Beach operations is Lanier’s mother, Caroline Meeks. Meeks is both the Broker in Charge and co-owner with husband, Buck Meeks, who manages the Field Services team with Lanier’s husband, Scott.   For nearly 20 years, the Victory Beach team has worked tirelessly to establish a network of top-of-the-line rental properties for Cape Fear visitors to enjoy. “As far as our properties go,” explains Lanier, “they are all updated, well-furnished and appointed. “We have always performed post-cleaning inspections and since the pandemic, have put freshly laundered duvets over all of the comforters between rentals.”   Lanier emphasizes how important the guests experience is “we strive to give our guests a relaxing, stress free, memorable vacation.” This emphasis on customer service has led to Victory Beach Vacations having a 4.8 Google rating with over 300 reviews by happy owners and guests. In addition to Victory Beach’s superior sanitation practices, the company offers properties for every type of visitor. Choose from luxury oceanfront houses and condos to more reasonbly priced 2nd row properties with oceanviews. Many properties include pools and hot tubs as well, perfect for outdoor entertaining, and many are dog friendly.   Lanier also notes that all properties are within walking or driving distance to Pleasure Island’s main attractions – Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. The former, as described by Lanier, is the more commercialized of the two destinations and features a boardwalk, outdoor dining options and a plethora of weekly activities including fireworks, live music, amusement park pop-ups, and movies under the stars. Kure Beach offers a more residential feel with its fishing pier, intimate restaurants and family favorite, North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher.More water fun awaits, too. “There is a harbor and a canal that feed into the intercoastal. We have several properties on the harbor so guests can bring their boat, kayak, [or jet ski] and travel between islands,” says Lanier.   A stay with Victory Beach Vacations is an annual pilgrimage for most. “A large percentage of guests are previous guests. Some even reserve the same property for the next year as they’re checking out,” Lanier says. “It’s almost like it’s their personal vacation home.”   Even before guests arrive at their vacation destination, the Victory Beach Vacations’ website greets them with a live beach cam and exquisite aerial footage of both Carolina and Kure Beaches.
